Fenster Quartz has the chemical formula SiO₂, crystallises in the trigonal system and measures 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Fenster (window) quartz is a form of skeletal quartz in which growth conditions favoured the edges of the crystal over its faces, leaving stepped cavities and open window planes across the terminations. It forms in high-supersaturation, rapidly cooling environments where nutrient supply cannot keep up with crystal expansion. Related to elestial and Jacaré quartz.
