Q: What is Fire Agate made of?

Fire Agate has the chemical formula SiO₂ · nH₂O with limonite/goethite inclusions, crystallises in the trigonal (microcrystalline) system and measures 6.5 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Fire agate is a Mesoamerican variety of chalcedony from the Late Tertiary volcanic zones of northern Mexico and the American Southwest. Its iridescence comes from thin-film interference in stacked plates of goethite and limonite that grew between chalcedony layers during hydrothermal deposition. Cutters remove the outer chalcedony crust to expose the fire below, following the play of colour by hand.
