Auralite-23 has the chemical formula SiO₂ + hematite, goethite, epidote, pyrite, rutile and others, crystallises in the trigonal (host quartz) system and measures 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Auralite-23 is a trade name for a red-cap amethyst from the Cape Cross Bay deposit north of Lake Superior, in which up to two dozen accessory minerals have grown into the quartz over roughly 1.2 billion years. Documented inclusions include hematite, goethite, pyrite, epidote, rutile, chlorite, sphalerite and native copper, giving the crystal its characteristic dusky colour and metallic flecking. The Canadian mine remains the only commercial source.
