Q: What is Galaxyite made of?

Galaxyite has the chemical formula (Ca,Na)(Al,Si)₄O₈, crystallises in the triclinic system and measures 6 – 6.5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Galaxyite is a trade name for a fine-grained labradorite-bearing anorthosite from Quebec, in which micrometre-scale labradorite grains produce a starfield of blue, violet and gold labradorescence against a dark matrix. The iridescence arises from light interference within lamellar plagioclase intergrowths formed on slow cooling of the parent gabbroic intrusion.
