Q: What is Purpurite made of?

Purpurite has the chemical formula MnPO₄, crystallises in the orthorhombic system and measures 4 – 4.5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Purpurite is manganese phosphate formed by the oxidation and leaching of lithiophilite in granitic pegmatites: lithium and iron are removed by weathering solutions, the manganese oxidises from Mn²⁺ to Mn³⁺, and the colour shifts from drab brown to intense violet. It forms the manganese end of a series with iron-rich heterosite, and the two are often intergrown. The material is soft, brittle and readily discoloured by acids, so specimens are best kept dry and unpolished.
