Garnet has the chemical formula Fe₃Al₂(SiO₄)₃ (almandine end-member), crystallises in the cubic system and measures 6.5 – 7.5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Garnet is a group of isostructural nesosilicates with the general formula X₃Y₂(SiO₄)₃; almandine, pyrope, spessartine, grossular, andradite and uvarovite are the principal species, distinguished by which cation occupies the X and Y sites. Almandine, the iron-rich end-member, is the commonest gem garnet and forms fine dodecahedral crystals in metamorphic schists.
