II. The Scientific Reading

What the lattice actually does.

Gibbsite is a monoclinic aluminium hydroxide and the principal aluminium-bearing mineral in most bauxite ores. It forms as a residual weathering product in humid tropical climates, where prolonged leaching strips silica from parent rock and leaves aluminium behind as hydroxides. Its layered structure — sheets of Al(OH)₆ octahedra held together by hydrogen bonds — is also the structural template for the octahedral layer in many clay minerals.
