Its name comes from the Italian a ventura — 'by chance' — and practitioners hold that it opens the small openings that make chance possible.

II. The Scientific Reading

What the lattice actually does.

Green aventurine is a metamorphic quartzite whose distinctive shimmer — 'aventurescence' — comes from small parallel flakes of chromium-rich fuchsite mica included in the quartz matrix. When light reflects off the aligned flakes, the polished surface flashes green. The name predates the mineral: an 18th-century Venetian glass called avventurina was made the same way, with copper flakes suspended in glass.
