II. The Scientific Reading
What the lattice actually does.
"Jade" is a cultural name for two distinct rocks that pass the same use test — extreme toughness from felted interlocking crystals. Nephrite is a fine-grained variety of the amphibole tremolite–actinolite series; jadeite is a sodium-aluminium pyroxene, generally harder and denser than nephrite and the only kind that occurs in the vivid "imperial" translucent green. Both are worked in carving because the interlocking microstructure resists fracture even at edges thin enough to translate light.
