Q: What is Jade made of?

Jade has the chemical formula Nephrite: Ca₂(Mg,Fe)₅Si₈O₂₂(OH)₂ · Jadeite: NaAlSi₂O₆, crystallises in the monoclinic (both nephrite amphibole and jadeite pyroxene) system and measures 6 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. "Jade" is a cultural name for two distinct rocks that pass the same use test — extreme toughness from felted interlocking crystals. Nephrite is a fine-grained variety of the amphibole tremolite–actinolite series; jadeite is a sodium-aluminium pyroxene, generally harder and denser than nephrite and the only kind that occurs in the vivid "imperial" translucent green. Both are worked in carving because the interlocking microstructure resists fracture even at edges thin enough to translate light.
