Green Sardonyx has the chemical formula SiO₂ (cryptocrystalline chalcedony), crystallises in the trigonal system and measures 6.5 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Sardonyx is a banded agate composed of alternating layers of sard (brown-red chalcedony coloured by iron oxide) and onyx (white or black chalcedony). Green sardonyx replaces the brown sard layer with green chalcedony coloured by chlorite or iron silicate inclusions. It forms in low-temperature hydrothermal veins and cavities in volcanic rocks, where silica-rich groundwater deposits successive layers of cryptocrystalline quartz.
