Q: What is Mexican Agate made of?

Mexican Agate has the chemical formula SiO₂, crystallises in the trigonal (microcrystalline) system and measures 6.5 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Mexican agates, including Crazy Lace and Laguna types from Chihuahua, are banded chalcedonies that formed in gas cavities of ancient volcanic flows. Successive silica-rich fluids deposited layers stained by iron and manganese oxides, producing the tight, fold-like patterns for which the region is known.
