Morganite has the chemical formula Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈ with Mn substitution, crystallises in the hexagonal system and measures 7.5 – 8 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Morganite is the pink to peach variety of beryl, colored by traces of manganese. It forms in granitic pegmatites alongside other beryl varieties such as aquamarine and heliodor, and was named in 1911 in honor of the American banker and gem collector J. P. Morgan.
