Orca Agate has the chemical formula SiO₂, crystallises in the trigonal (microcrystalline) system and measures 6.5 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Orca agate is a trade name for a strikingly banded agate whose alternating black and white layers are microcrystalline quartz precipitated in cavities within volcanic rocks. The black bands are typically colored by manganese or iron oxides, while the white bands are relatively pure silica.
