II. The Scientific Reading

What the lattice actually does.

Iowaite is a hydrated magnesium-iron hydroxide chloride belonging to the hydrotalcite supergroup, with a layered double-hydroxide structure in which Cl⁻ and water occupy the interlayer. It forms as a low-temperature alteration of brucite and serpentine minerals in serpentinised ultramafic rocks and was first described from a drill core in Precambrian rocks of Sioux County, Iowa. Because it is very soft and readily oxidises to a brown ferric phase, iowaite is a specimen mineral rather than a lapidary material.
