Peridot is the gem variety of olivine, a magnesium-iron silicate. Its colour comes from ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) in octahedral sites. It forms in mafic and ultramafic rocks, in meteorites (pallasites), and occasionally in volcanic basalts.
