Peridot has the chemical formula (Mg,Fe)₂SiO₄, crystallises in the orthorhombic system and measures 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Peridot is the gem variety of olivine, a magnesium-iron silicate. Its colour comes from ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) in octahedral sites. It forms in mafic and ultramafic rocks, in meteorites (pallasites), and occasionally in volcanic basalts.
