Copal has the chemical formula Terpenoid resin (C-H-O, largely diterpenoid acids), crystallises in the amorphous system and measures 1.5 – 2.5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Copal is a sub-fossil tree resin — an intermediate stage between fresh conifer or leguminous tree exudate and true amber, typically only thousands to a few million years old rather than tens of millions. It has not yet fully polymerised, which is why it softens under a hot needle, dissolves in ethanol and alcohol solvents, and retains a strong resinous scent that fully mineralised amber has lost.
