Purple Aragonite has the chemical formula CaCO₃ with trace Mn/organic pigment, crystallises in the orthorhombic system and measures 3.5 – 4 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Purple aragonite is the orthorhombic polymorph of calcium carbonate, sharing composition with calcite but differing in crystal structure and forming acicular or pseudohexagonal twinned crystals. Violet tones are attributed to trace manganese and, in some sedimentary occurrences, to organic pigments. Aragonite is metastable at surface conditions and converts slowly to calcite over geological time.
