Q: What is Purple Selenite made of?

Purple Selenite has the chemical formula CaSO₄·2H₂O, crystallises in the monoclinic system and measures 2 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Selenite is the transparent crystalline variety of gypsum, hydrated calcium sulfate, which precipitates when saline waters evaporate in basins and sabkhas. Faint violet tints come from trace impurities and from natural irradiation of the crystal lattice; much intensely coloured 'purple selenite' on the market is dyed. At a hardness of 2 it can be scratched with a fingernail, has one perfect cleavage that peels into sheets, and is slightly soluble in water, so it should never be washed or left in damp air.
