Aqua Aura Quartz has the chemical formula SiO₂ + Au vapour deposit, crystallises in the trigonal (host quartz) system and measures 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Aqua aura is a treated material, not a natural species. Clear quartz points are placed in a vacuum chamber, heated to roughly 870 °C, and bathed in vapourised gold. The gold atoms bond permanently to the silica surface in a film only a few nanometres thick; thin-film interference against the underlying quartz produces the characteristic saturated blue that gives the stone its name.
