Arizona Pietersite has the chemical formula SiO₂ with silicified amphibole fibres (crocidolite, riebeckite), crystallises in the trigonal (host silica) system and measures 6.5 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Pietersite is a brecciated chatoyant quartz in which fibrous amphiboles (crocidolite and riebeckite) have been silicified and then broken, cemented, and re-oriented by tectonic movement. Light reflecting from the parallel fibre bundles produces chatoyancy, and the fractured, re-cemented fabric gives the material its characteristic swirling appearance. The Arizona variant is a regionally sourced analogue of the original 1962 Namibian find.
