Herkimer Diamond has the chemical formula SiO₂, crystallises in the trigonal system and measures 7.5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Herkimer diamonds are doubly terminated quartz crystals that grew freely inside dolostone cavities of the Cambrian Little Falls Formation in central New York, roughly 500 million years ago. Because the crystals nucleated in soft clay or vug fluid rather than attaching to a wall, both ends developed natural terminations. Many contain black anthraxolite (solid hydrocarbon) or two-phase fluid inclusions preserving the original brine.
