Black Onyx has the chemical formula SiO₂, crystallises in the trigonal (microcrystalline) system and measures 6.5 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Solid black onyx is a variety of chalcedony traded as a single-colour dark stone. Because naturally uniform black chalcedony is rare, the majority of commercial black onyx is pale grey chalcedony treated by soaking in a warm sugar solution and then in concentrated sulphuric acid, which chars the sugar between the microcrystals to a stable jet-black. The treatment is centuries old and considered standard for the trade.
