I. The Metaphysical Reading
How the stone has been held.
Black onyx is a classical stone of composure and self-mastery, carried through interviews, exams and public work. Practitioners associate it with the ability to hold a position without needing to explain it, and with returning to oneself after a period of external demand.

II. The Scientific Reading
What the lattice actually does.
Solid black onyx is a variety of chalcedony traded as a single-colour dark stone. Because naturally uniform black chalcedony is rare, the majority of commercial black onyx is pale grey chalcedony treated by soaking in a warm sugar solution and then in concentrated sulphuric acid, which chars the sugar between the microcrystals to a stable jet-black. The treatment is centuries old and considered standard for the trade.
