Black Spinel has the chemical formula (Mg,Fe)Al₂O₄, crystallises in the cubic system and measures 7.5 – 8 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Black spinel is a variety of magnesium-iron aluminate crystallising in the cubic system, most often as sharp octahedral crystals in alluvial gem gravels. Its high hardness, single refractive index and lack of cleavage make it a durable faceted gem alternative to black diamond and black tourmaline. The gem gravels of Bo Ploi in Thailand and the Mogok stone tract in Myanmar are the historical sources.
