Black Star Diopside has the chemical formula CaMgSi₂O₆ with oriented magnetite needles, crystallises in the monoclinic system and measures 5.5 – 6.5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Black star diopside is a variety of the pyroxene diopside whose opaque black body is threaded with oriented magnetite needles. When cut en cabochon parallel to the crystal's basal plane, the reflections from two intersecting sets of needles form a sharp four-rayed star, an unusual asterism (most star stones show six rays). The Indian deposits of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu remain the sole commercial source.
