Black Tourmaline has the chemical formula NaFe₃Al₆(BO₃)₃Si₆O₁₈(OH)₄, crystallises in the trigonal system and measures 7 – 7.5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Tourmaline is pyroelectric and piezoelectric: it develops an electrical charge in response to changes in temperature and pressure. Heated tourmaline crystals attract dust and light fibres - a phenomenon documented by Dutch traders in the early 18th century, who called them 'aschentrekker' (ash-drawers).
