Cavansite has the chemical formula Ca(V⁴⁺O)Si₄O₁₀·4H₂O, crystallises in the orthorhombic (radiating spherulites) system and measures 3 – 4 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Cavansite is a rare hydrous calcium vanadium silicate whose brilliant blue colour comes from vanadium in the four-valent state within its orthorhombic framework. It forms as radiating spherulites on stilbite and heulandite in cavities of the Deccan Trap basalts, principally at the Wagholi quarries near Pune, India, discovered in 1988 and still the world's main commercial source.
