Bolivianite (Ametrine) has the chemical formula SiO₂ with Fe³⁺ (bicolour zoning), crystallises in the trigonal system and measures 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Ametrine, marketed under the Bolivian name bolivianite, is a naturally bicolour quartz in which one sector of the crystal contains ferric iron in the purple amethyst state and the adjacent sector contains it in the yellow citrine state, the difference set by minute variations in temperature and oxidation during growth. The only significant commercial source is the Anahí Mine in the Santa Cruz department of eastern Bolivia, worked since the seventeenth century.
