Japan-law (or La Gardette-law) twinning is a rare contact twin of quartz on the {11-22} plane, in which two prismatic crystals share a common face and meet at a re-entrant angle of about 84°33′. The result is a flat, heart-shaped or V-shaped intergrowth first documented from the Otomezaka Mine in Yamanashi, Japan. Because the twin plane requires specific low-temperature hydrothermal conditions, well-formed Japan-law twins are uncommon and highly collected.
