Q: What is Isua made of?

Isua has the chemical formula Fe₂O₃ + Fe₃O₄ + SiO₂ (banded iron formation), crystallises in the metamorphic assemblage (multiple phases) system and measures 5.5 – 7 (Mohs, aggregate) on the Mohs scale. The Isua supracrustal belt in southwestern Greenland preserves some of the oldest known supracrustal rocks on Earth, dated to about 3.7–3.8 billion years. Its banded iron formations are millimetre- to centimetre-scale interlayers of iron oxides (hematite and magnetite) with silica-rich chert, deposited on an early ocean floor and later metamorphosed. Specimens sold as "Isua stone" are cut sections of this metamorphosed BIF and are prized for their extreme antiquity rather than any single mineral species.

The Isua supracrustal belt in southwestern Greenland preserves some of the oldest known supracrustal rocks on Earth, dated to about 3.7–3.8 billion years.
