Brochantite has the chemical formula Cu₄(SO₄)(OH)₆, crystallises in the monoclinic system and measures 3.5 – 4 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Brochantite is a hydrous copper sulphate that forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidised zones of copper deposits, particularly in arid climates where sulphate solutions are stable. It occurs as brilliant green acicular crystals in radiating sprays, most famously at the Chuquicamata and Collahuasi mines in the Atacama Desert of Chile, at Tsumeb in Namibia and at Bisbee in Arizona.
