I. The Metaphysical Reading

How the stone has been held.

Bumblebee jasper is worked with as a stone of decisive action and healthy fear, kept in mind as the stone that reminds a practitioner to respect their own limits. It is handled with washed hands and never worn in contact with broken skin.

II. The Scientific Reading

What the lattice actually does.

Bumblebee jasper is not a jasper at all but a volcanic sedimentary rock from fumarole vents on the Papandayan volcano in West Java. Its yellow bands are pigmented by orpiment (arsenic trisulphide) and realgar (arsenic sulphide), with black bands of pyrite and manganese oxides, cemented in calcite and aragonite. Because of the arsenic content, cutters use wet grinding and full respiratory protection, and finished pieces should be washed before handling.
