Charoite has the chemical formula K(Ca,Na)₂Si₄O₁₀(OH,F)·H₂O, crystallises in the monoclinic system and measures 5 – 6 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Charoite is a rare monoclinic potassium calcium silicate found in exactly one location on Earth: the Murun massif near the Chara River in the Sakha Republic of Siberia, where it formed by contact metamorphism of limestone against a nepheline syenite intrusion. Its swirling fibrous texture and violet colour arise from intergrown microfibres containing trace manganese; no other locality has produced gem-quality material.
