I. The Metaphysical Reading

How the stone has been held.

Chinese Writing Stone is worked with as a stone of language and reading, kept nearby during writing, editing and the effort of finding the sentence that already exists inside a paragraph. Practitioners hold it as a reminder that the world writes on itself long before anyone thinks to read it.

II. The Scientific Reading

What the lattice actually does.

Chinese Writing Stone is a porphyritic rock, not a single mineral, in which angular white potassium feldspar phenocrysts crystallised early from a slowly cooling magma and were then engulfed by a fine-grained dark groundmass. The resulting contrast pattern superficially resembles Chinese calligraphy characters; the rock takes a good polish for cabochons and decorative slabs.
