Crocoite has the chemical formula PbCrO₄, crystallises in the monoclinic system and measures 2.5 – 3 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Crocoite is a lead chromate whose discovery in the eighteenth century led to the isolation of the element chromium — its name means 'saffron' in Greek. The finest specimens come from the Dundas mineral field in Tasmania, where slender orange-red prisms form radiating sprays in oxidised lead-zinc veins. It contains lead and should be handled dry and stored away from food surfaces.
