Dalmatian Jasper has the chemical formula Felsic igneous rock: feldspar + quartz + arfvedsonite / aegirine specks, crystallises in the aggregate (not a true jasper) system and measures 6 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Dalmatian jasper is a marketing name; petrologically it is a pale felsic igneous rock (an aplite / microgranite) whose cream groundmass of feldspar and quartz is speckled with dark grains of the sodium amphibole arfvedsonite (sometimes with minor aegirine or tourmaline), plus brown iron-oxide staining. It contains essentially no chalcedony and is therefore not a true jasper.
