Dioptase has the chemical formula CuSiO₃·H₂O, crystallises in the trigonal system and measures 5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Dioptase is a hydrated copper silicate that forms in the oxidised zones of copper deposits, where copper-rich fluids react with silica-bearing groundwater. Its saturated green colour comes from copper in the silicate framework. Classic prismatic crystals come from Tsumeb, Namibia and the Altyn-Tyube deposit in Kazakhstan; the mineral is too soft and cleavable for most jewellery use.
