Actinolite has the chemical formula Ca₂(Mg,Fe)₅Si₈O₂₂(OH)₂, crystallises in the monoclinic (amphibole group) system and measures 5 – 6 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Actinolite is an amphibole forming a solid-solution series between magnesian tremolite and iron-rich ferro-actinolite. Colour deepens as Fe²⁺ substitutes for Mg²⁺ in the octahedral sites. In its compact fibrous form it grades into nephrite jade, one of the toughest natural materials known; its asbestiform variety, byssolite, is the same species in a wholly different mechanical regime.
