Epidote has the chemical formula Ca₂(Al,Fe)₃(SiO₄)₃(OH), crystallises in the monoclinic system and measures 6 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Epidote is a calcium aluminium iron sorosilicate that forms in metamorphosed calcareous rocks and in the alteration zones of igneous rocks. The Knappenwand deposit in the Austrian Alps produced the classical dark-green striated crystals that defined the species; large modern crystals come from Pakistan and Norway. Epidote often intergrows with quartz, feldspar and actinolite.
