Erionite has the chemical formula (Na₂,K₂,Ca)₄Al₈Si₂₈O₇₂·28H₂O (zeolite group), crystallises in the hexagonal system and measures 3.5 – 4 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Erionite is a fibrous hexagonal zeolite chemically similar to offretite, formed by the alteration of volcanic tuffs by alkaline groundwater. Its fibres are classified as a Group 1 human carcinogen by the IARC and are the confirmed cause of endemic mesothelioma clusters in Cappadocian villages built from erionite-bearing tuff; specimens must not be handled, cut, polished or worn.
