Faden Quartz has the chemical formula SiO₂, crystallises in the trigonal system and measures 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Faden quartz (German 'Faden' meaning thread) is a tabular quartz that grows in tectonic fissures where the host rock is slowly pulled apart. Each cycle of movement cracks the growing crystal and quartz then heals the break with fibrous silica, leaving a characteristic white thread trapped along the growth axis. The finest specimens come from Alpine fissures and the Baluchistan region of Pakistan.
