Fulgurite has the chemical formula SiO₂ (lechatelierite glass), crystallises in the amorphous system and measures 5 – 6 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Fulgurite is a naturally occurring glass produced when cloud-to-ground lightning discharges into quartz-rich sand or soil, momentarily reaching temperatures above 1,800 °C and fusing the grains into a hollow, branching tube of lechatelierite (amorphous silica). Each specimen is a direct fossil record of a single lightning strike; the Sahara and coastal Florida are among the most productive natural laboratories.
