Goshenite has the chemical formula Be₃Al₂(SiO₃)₆, crystallises in the hexagonal system and measures 7.5 – 8 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Goshenite is the colourless variety of beryl and the closest the beryl group comes to a chemically pure Be₃Al₂(SiO₃)₆ composition, containing very little of the trace elements (Cr, V, Fe, Mn, Cs) that give emerald, aquamarine, heliodor and morganite their colours. It was historically ground into lenses and used as a proxy for rock crystal in optical instruments.
