Lazurite is the essential blue mineral in lapis lazuli. It is a feldspathoid, meaning its silica content is lower than that of feldspar, and its vivid color comes from sulfur radical anions trapped in the aluminosilicate cage. Historically, it supplied the pigment ultramarine.
