Lazulite has the chemical formula MgAl₂(PO₄)₂(OH)₂, crystallises in the monoclinic system and measures 5.5 – 6 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Lazulite is a relatively rare magnesium aluminum phosphate hydroxide mineral. It typically forms as well-developed blue crystals in high-grade metamorphic rocks and quartzites. Its name derives from the Arabic lazaward, the same root as lapis lazuli and azure, referring to its color.
