What the lattice actually does.
Prasiolite is the green variety of quartz, coloured by iron in a different oxidation state and coordination from that which produces amethyst. Almost all commercial material is amethyst heated to roughly 400–500 °C, or occasionally irradiated; natural prasiolite is genuinely rare and known from a handful of localities including Poland and Brazil. The name 'green amethyst' is a trade term rather than a mineralogical one.
