Preseli Bluestone has the chemical formula Ca(Mg,Fe)Si₂O₆ + plagioclase feldspar, crystallises in the monoclinic + triclinic (rock) system and measures 6 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Preseli bluestone is a spotted dolerite from the Mynydd Preseli in Pembrokeshire, Wales, composed chiefly of plagioclase feldspar and augite with distinctive pale spots of altered feldspar. Petrological and geochemical work has matched the bluestone monoliths at Stonehenge to specific outcrops such as Carn Goedog and Craig Rhos-y-felin, roughly 225 km from the monument. The rock is also weakly magnetic in places due to its iron-titanium oxide content.
