Purple Chalcedony has the chemical formula SiO₂, crystallises in the trigonal (microcrystalline) system and measures 6.5 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Purple chalcedony is a microcrystalline variety of quartz built from submicroscopic fibres of silica, with the violet tone usually attributed to trace iron and to colour centres created by natural irradiation. Much of the material on the market grows as botryoidal crusts lining volcanic cavities, where silica-rich groundwater deposits layer after layer of chalcedony onto the cavity wall. Because chalcedony is porous at the microscale, some commercial parcels are dyed; natural colour tends to be uneven and banded rather than uniform.
