Purple Fluorite has the chemical formula CaF₂, crystallises in the cubic (isometric) system and measures 4 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Fluorite is calcium fluoride crystallising in the cubic system, famous for perfect octahedral cleavage in four directions and for lending its name to fluorescence. The violet colour is not from an impurity element but from colour centres — lattice sites where a fluoride ion is missing and its place is taken by a trapped electron, which absorbs yellow-green light. Heating can bleach the colour, and its low hardness of 4 means it scratches easily and is better collected than worn.
