Moldavite has the chemical formula Approx. SiO₂ 75–80% + Al₂O₃, K₂O, FeO, crystallises in the amorphous (natural glass) system and measures 5.5 – 6.5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Moldavite is a natural silica-rich glass — a tektite — formed roughly 15 million years ago when a large meteorite impact in what is now the Nördlinger Ries in Germany hurled molten ejecta across central Europe. It is found only in a limited strewn field across Bohemia and Moravia in the Czech Republic.
