I. The Metaphysical Reading
How the stone has been held.
Blue calcite is a gentle stone of recovery, worked with in the days after illness, argument or overstimulation. Practitioners keep it in bedrooms and reading rooms rather than desks, and speak of it as a mineral that lowers the volume of a room without asking anyone to explain themselves.

II. The Scientific Reading
What the lattice actually does.
Blue calcite is the trigonal calcium carbonate coloured by minor inclusions of chrysocolla and other copper minerals during precipitation from meteoric groundwater. It shows the strong birefringence typical of clear calcite, doubling any image seen through a polished slab, and dissolves readily in weak acid. The Mexican Cave-in-the-Mountain deposits produced most of the powder-blue material now on the market.
